Filipino Kali Hubud Drills


Hubud are close range trapping and sensitivity drills practiced widely within the Filipino Kali martial art. Also called
Higot Hubud Lubud drills they represent various types of solutions (deflections, clears, checks, etc.) to various problems (hit, grab, tackle, etc). They are continuously connecting and disconnecting with all types of techniques. Hubud are a possibility generator...

 

Each slight change creates a new type of possibility. As you train Hubud you begin to realize how not to do things and how to rightly do things. It teaches you not to crowd your own movements so as you prevent getting trapped yourself, also it teaches that when hands can't help you, that quick positional changes of your body will. The Hubud drills can have a prefix, insertion, and suffix type actions such as getting in an arm-lock first then using Hubud as a way to escape and deliver a counter strike or lock of your own, a throw, a kick, etc.

 

The full name of these drills is higot at hampak hubud at hampak lubud at hampak. Higot is the concept of tying up an opponents limbs, whereas Hampak means hit. Hubud is the concept of untying your own limbs from a trap, once again you then return a strike. Lubud means to blend together, once again after doing so you strike. The aim of these drills is to develop energy awareness & sensitivity in close range. Higot Hubud Lubud drills Hubud drills are done at Corto distance or close range from angles of attack 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5, by using two main principles of Filipino Kali: Passa (going with the incoming force) and Contradas (going against the incoming force).

 

Hubud drills generally have a basic three-step sequence:
 

1. Receive
2. Redirect
3. Return

 

Hubud drills have several components to them:
 

1. Upper body striking
2. Upper body clinching
3. Lower body kicking/kneeing
4. Lower body checking/sweeping
5. Joint locking finishes/breaks

 

The Filipino Kali practitioner via Hubud drills develops major necessary skills (Attributes): Co-ordination, Ambidexterity, Hand Speed, Re-activity, Stress Management, Peripheral Vision, Timing, Close Range Distance Familiarization, and Proper Posture. Also he learns to apply Filipino Kali Gunting Limb Destructions, to use Hubud patterns with weapons such as knives and Kerambit. Most important the practitioner learns to adapt instantly to rapidly changing stimuli of random types of attacks and angles.

Higot Hubud Lubud drill from angle #1 (Basic version)
"a" strikes angle #1 (knife hand) to neck.
"b" catches and absorbs energy in left hooked hand then "covers" on outside of arm with his right & parries it across to close centerline of opponent off. Check at elbow with left palm (making sure to push into body), then strike angle #1 (knife hand) to neck to repeat drill.
Note: "a" then repeats actions of "a" to keep flow drill going. This is the basic version of this angle #1 drill there are various others.


Higot Hubud Lubud drill from angle #5 (Basic version)
"a" attacks straight right punch to face.
"b" parries with left (soft palm block), "covers" with right "sliding arm" to close centerline, checks elbow with left palm (pushing into body) then strikes angle #5 (straight punch to face) to keep flow drill going. This is the basic version of this drill there are various others.
