Jeet Kune Do Kicking
Jeet Kune Do
practitioners believe they should
direct their kicks to their opponent's shins, knees, thighs and
midsection. These targets are the closest to the foot, provide more
stability and are more difficult to defend against. Maintaining low kicks
utilizes the principle of economy of motion by reducing the distance a
kick must travel, thus minimizing the "time" element. However, as with all
other JKD principles nothing is "written in stone". If a target of
opportunity presents itself, even a target above the waist, one could take
advantage and not be hampered by this principle.

Jeet Kune Do Kicking Sets
It's
commonly believed that Bruce Lee discarded all forms and sets by the time
he developed his system of Jeet Kune Do. The truth is he taught several
sets during the Los Angeles Chinatown era.
During this era he taught 5 different kicking sets.
They were designed not only to teach all the variations of kicks he
practiced, but also to teach the various types of footwork required for
kicking effectively, balance, coordination etc.
At first, these kicking sets are practiced with strict form. Once you've
learned the sequences and can perform them adequately, they were trained
in a more fluid manner... similar to shadow kickboxing. Or as Sifu Tackett
teaches, “classical” and “freestyle” variations of the sets.
The kicking sets were named:
Die Yut Low
(straight kick)
Die Yee Low
(hook kick)
Die Sum Low
(north south set)
Die Say Low
(chasing set)
JKD Kicking Set
(sometimes called “The Little Dragon Set”)
Die Yut Low Straight Kicking Set (Use only
Jik Tek Straight Kick)
Die Yee Low Hook Kicking Set (Use only O'ou
Tek Hook Kick)
